Copyright PolicyPolicyAll work published by Writers Closet shall be registered by the author(s) of the work with the US Copyright Office. Writers Closet may publish an author's work for which a copyright application has been filed and not yet received from the Copyright Office. In the publishing agreement, it must be stated and authors must agree to file for copyright registration and provide a copy to Writers Closet when it is received. Printed versions of the author's work cannot be produced until Writers Closet has actually received the copyright registration. If the author of the work is not a US Citizen, Writers Closet shall accept the Copyright registration from the Copyright Office of the country of origin, providing that country is recognized by the US Copyright Office. Alternatively, non-US citizens are authorized to register their work with the US Copyright Office, but must meet their requirements as listed on their web site. Policy ExceptionsShort works (25 or less pages), such as short stories, research papers, etc., are exempt from this policy except when they are part of a compilation of works. Then the entire compilation should be registered. Purpose of PolicyThe purpose of this policy is to reduce or eliminate liability to Writers Closet. By placing a copyright notice on a document, technically, the work is protected by copyright laws and need not be registered. This "common law" copyright does not prevent the possibility of someone placing their copyright notice on someone else's work. In addition, if litigation should arise from questions regarding a published author's work, then a registered copyright will hold up in court whereas a "common law" copyright may not. NotesIn our Publishing Agreement, authors agree to file for the copyright registration and then forward a copy to Writers Closet when it is received. We will publish the work while the author is waiting for the registration from the Copyright Office. According to the US Copyright Office Web Site, the registration process may take 4 to 5 months. If we do not receive the copyright registration within 6 months from the date of the publishing agreement, the eBook will be removed from the Writers Closet web site. Writers Closet may in the future offer a Copyright Assistance Service to assist authors in registering their work with the US Copyright Office. |
