Manuscript Submission Requirements
Before submitting a final manuscript, authors must provide a two-to-three paragraph summary of the work, along with the table of contents. Think of the summary as the liner notes found on book dust covers - this is what sells the book to consumers (and to publishers). If Writers Closet accepts the summary, you will be asked to submit the entire manuscript for further review and final acceptance.
To submit your final manuscript, you must include the items listed below (except where noted as optional). Failure to comply with these submission requirements will delay publication, or may be cause for rejection of your manuscript.
Required Items
- The Manuscript Itself. The format must be in MS-Word 2000 or earlier, Rich Text Format (RTF), or HTML. The manuscript must be thoroughly and completely proofed for spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors. Technically-defective manuscripts will be rejected. If you wish to have your manuscript professionally edited, Writers Closet can provide the service for our standard fee (see "Professional Services" in the menu at the left).
- Book Summary. Provide a summary description of your book in two or three paragraphs. Each book will have its own web page at WritersCloset.com describing it to potential customers. We will use your summary description on that web page, so, the better the description, the better your book will sell.
- Disclaimer. In some cases, depending on the subject, we may require an author to provide a disclaimer for the book. This is especially true with "Self Help" books and some "How To" books. We will let you know when you submit your initial summary for our review if you will need a disclaimer.
- Prior Copyright and/or publishing information. If your manuscript was previously published in another form, or was previously copyrighted, please submit the details. We need to know the dates of all prior copyrights and publishing events, previous versions and editions, and the names and locations of previous publishers.
- Book Graphics. If you include photos, charts, graphs, artwork or illustrations embedded in the text of your manuscript, you must also submit each separate graphic file used. For example, if your Word manuscript contains 15 digital photographs, you would submit the completed manuscript containing the embedded photos, PLUS all 15 .JPG (or .GIF, .BMP, .PRN, etc.) files. Note that you must be the copyright owner of, or have written license to use, any graphic displayed in a published work, including your Cover Graphic (see #6).
- eBook Cover Graphic. You must provide the graphic to be used on the eBook cover. If you do not have a graphic for the eBook cover, we can select one from our library of nearly one million stock graphics. In such a case, please specify or sketch a rough layout of the cover you have in mind, and the type of graphic you would like. If you need custom artwork or illustrations, Writers Closet can provide this service at the rate of $50 per hour.
- Sources and references. It is a violation of publishing ethics and, possibly, a copyright violation, to include direct quotations or large summaries of other authors' works without giving credit to those authors, including the complete bibliographic reference: author, book title, year, publisher, publisher's city and state, edition, page number(s), web address (if applicable). In most cases, a large direct quotation also requires written permission from the publisher of the work being quoted, whereupon the reference would include the phrase "Used by permission." Please ensure that all uses of other people's material have been properly and thoroughly credited in your manuscript. Each reference should be included as a footnote, an endnote section at the close of each chapter, or (at least) in a Bibliography at the end of the book (see #14 below).
- Copyright Registration. If the current version of your manuscript was not previously copyrighted, submit a copy of the Copyright Registration from the US Copyright Office when it is received. You do not have to wait to receive the registration from the Copyright office to submit your work.
Optional Items
- Dedication Page (optional). If you would like to dedicate your book, please provide the write up for the dedication page.
- About the Author Page (optional). If you would like to include a page about the author, please provide this write up. First-time authors often find it a good idea to include a brief biography as a means of introducing themselves and establishing their credentials in the book's subject matter.
- Preface or Introduction (optional). Most books include a preface or introduction, setting the tone, or establishing essential background information, for the reader.
- Forward (optional). Some authors include an endorsement by another author or expert in the book's subject matter, further establishing the validity of the book. If you would like a Forward, please submit the text and the writer's full name as it will appear in the book.
- Bibliography (optional). If your book contains numerous references to other authors and sources, you should include a Bibliography in your book. Each entry should include the complete reference, as described in #7 above.
- Color scheme (optional). Unless you request specific colors, the publisher will choose the font styles, font colors, and page background color for your eBook. The default font used for titles, chapter headings and sub-headings is "Arial" - black. The default font used for the body text of your book is "Times New Roman" - black, on a standard white background. In some cases, title and heading colors and font styles can be made to closely match the cover graphics, which adds a little contrast to the body text, making your eBook more pleasing to the eye. Note that font selection is limited to standard Microsoft Windows fonts, since most eBooks use the fonts available on the reader's computer. The time to pick these fonts and colors is before your manuscript is converted to eBook format!
